Celebrating Indigenous People’s Day with a Look Back at the 20/20 Wavelength Project

On this National Indigenous Peoples Day, we celebrate the creativity and cultural pride of artists like Albert Goulet, Brenn Royal and Alanna Bluebird-Onspot, whose contributions to cSPACE Projects’ 20/20 Wavelength Project highlight the enduring strength and vibrancy of Indigenous communities.

The 20/20 Wavelength Project began as a vibrant initiative during Alberta Culture Days, at the height of the global Covid-19 pandemic. This project, led by mixed-blood multidisciplinary artist Andy Moro, aimed to explore “What Matters Now” through community engagement, both online and in person.

The 20/20 Wavelength Project at cSPACE Marda Loop embodies the spirit of our creative hub’s identity as a place for “Creative Border Crossings.” This concept, envisioned by Indigenous Elder Dr. LeRoy Little Bear, recognizes and bridges diverse cultural expressions and histories within a vibrant, inclusive community space.

Andy Moro, co-director of ARTICLE 11, an Indigenous Activism Arts organization, alongside partner Tara Beagan, reached out to local artists in spoken word, visual art, music, and dance to capture their thoughts and performances on video. These were later projected on and through historic windows salvaged from the former King Edward school building, creating a unique and powerful display.

Among the featured artists were Indigenous dancers Brenn Royal and Albert Goulet, and poet Alanna Bluebird-Onespot. Albert Goulet is a performer of men’s traditional dance, while Brenn Royal, also known as Status Savage, is a traditional Jingle Dress dancer and Hip Hop artist. Alanna Bluebird-Onespot, a poet from the Siksika Nisiitapi and Tsuut’ina Dinatii, empowers the next generation of Indigenous youth through diverse artistic expressions and founded HEAL – Helping Every Artist Live to nurture young artists’ growth and healing.

Read more of their stories below, and enjoy the accompanying videos of their performances.
