Unveiling Post-Consumer Paper’s Potential with Puppets (In Person)

November 25, 2023 @ 1:00 pm - 3:30 pm

In this hands-on workshop for Reggio-inspired educators, participants will discover the storytelling potential of post-consumer papers.

Guided by artist and educator Jennifer Stables, participants will delve into the art of crafting handheld mask puppets and exploring their use in the classroom. Participants will be invited to engage with a variety of post-consumer papers (magazines, newspapers, tissue paper, gift wrap, office paper, old books, paper bags, etc.) by folding, bending, cutting, and crumpling them. They will be encouraged to play and explore using their sense of sight, sound, smell, and touch. They will be asked to reflect on the story of the paper. Where did it come from? Who has it been? This exploration will allow educators to gain a deeper understanding of the materials and explore their potential for creative expression.

Following this exploration, participants will have the opportunity to share their findings and insights with one another. This conversation will hopefully foster a sense of community and inspire new ideas and approaches to working with papers.

Building upon their discoveries, participants will then be guided to create their own handheld mask puppets. Rather than following a step-by-step process, participants will be encouraged to apply their discoveries and insights to their own unique creations. They will be invited to use techniques such as layering, crumpling, and folding the paper to create different forms.

To finish the mask puppet, a wooden dowel will be attached to the back to create a handle. Participants will be encouraged to explore moving and performing their mask puppets. There will be time for presentation, sharing, and reflection at the end of the class.

Join Jennifer on Saturday, November 25th, from 13:00 – 15:30 HRS (MST) for this engaging workshop.
