In her solo art exhibit, Athena Cooper paints the interabled love story between herself and her able-bodied husband highlighting the everyday moments that make up their life together—from the mundane to the life-changing.
Born with the rare genetic disorder Osteogenesis Imperfecta (aka “brittle bone disease”) and a wheelchair user since the age of six. Athena struggled with society’s ill-fitting narrative around disability that suggested finding a romantic partner would be an impossible task. Since meeting her husband ten years ago, she has learned that a loving relationship that includes disability might look different from the outside, but is remarkably and beautifully ordinary in all the ways that count.
Opening Reception: Thursday, August 1st, 7-9pm.
The reception will celebrate the culmination of two years of creative work. Light refreshments will be served along with live music provided by local cellist, Liam Epp.
The exhibit is made possible with the generous support of Canada Council for the Arts, Calgary Arts Development and the City of Calgary.
