cSPACE Projects and The Chartwell Foundation Bring a Senior Artist’s Dream to Life

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Calgary, Alberta — June 10, 2024

cSPACE Projects and The Chartwell Foundation are thrilled to announce a heartwarming collaboration that will make a senior artist’s dream come true. Kathy Lewis, a senior resident at Chartwell Fountains of Mission Retirement Residence and experienced textile artist, will have her very first painting exhibition this summer, thanks to The Chartwell Foundation’s wish granting program.

The Chartwell Foundation, a Canadian charity dedicated to addressing loneliness and isolation by fulfilling seniors’ dreams and enhancing their sense of purpose, has been making dreams come true since 2022. From reuniting loved ones to celebrating lifelong passions and paying tribute to past legacies, the Foundation has granted over 30 wishes across the country since its inception.

Kathy Lewis

Kathy Lewis, a lifelong art enthusiast, whose textile and fibre art works have been exhibited in prestigious places such as Vancouver City Hall, took up painting in her retirement, is one such wish recipient.

“When you are just into something and you’re just there, you don’t know anything else,” Lewis says of her passion for painting.

Arthritis curtailed Kathy’s textile arts work, and so she took up painting as a way to continue her lifelong passion for art. Painting helps her stay mentally active, despite the challenges of arthritis. Now, thanks to The Chartwell Foundation, Lewis’s dream of showcasing her paintings in a gallery, with a gala reception for friends and family, is about to come true.

After applying to several local Calgary galleries, The Chartwell Foundation found an ally in cSPACE Marda Loop. Kathy had initially hoped for a day to show her work, but cSPACE was able to donate exhibition space in their prominent Level 1 gallery for almost  a month. From June 10 to July 1, cSPACE Marda Loop will host an exhibition featuring 29 of Lewis’s pieces. The opening reception on June 26 will welcome the community to meet the artist and celebrate her remarkable journey.

“You compare yourself to other people, and I’m not a Picasso or a Michelangelo,” Lewis humbly remarks. “But I think I can do reasonably well and I hope people like them.”

cSPACE Marda Loop, known for fostering creativity and community, is the perfect venue for this inspiring exhibition.

“We are honoured to support Kathy in her artistic journey and provide a space for her to share her dream with the world,” says Erin MacLean-Berko, Events + Engagement Manager at cSPACE.

Kathy Lewis’s exhibition is not only an expression of her love of visual arts but also a celebration of The Chartwell Foundation’s commitment to enriching the lives of seniors, and cSPACE’s championing of lifelong involvement in the arts. Join us in celebrating Kathy’s artistry and the incredible impact of fulfilling dreams at any age.
