SUMMARY:Gallery Reception: Rebus Plates for our Times/Assiettes Rebus pour temps qui Courent
DESCRIPTION:Gallery Reception: Rebus Plates for our Times/Assiettes Rebus pour temps qui Courent\ncSPACE Marda Loop\nAlberta Craft Gallery – Level 2\nApril 11\, 2026\n1:00 PM – 4:00 PM\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin Alberta Craft Council and Alliance Française at cSPACE for an afternoon of art\, ideas\, and community with Rebus Plates for Our Times / Assiettes Rébus pour Les Temps Qui Courent. \nBegin your visit on Level 4 in the RGO Treehouse with a thought-provoking craft talk\, Pictorial Puns: Rebus Plates for Our Times\, presented by craft historian Dr. Jennifer Salahub. This engaging talk explores the rich history of rebus imagery—visual riddles that combine pictures and letters to convey layered meanings—and their evolution from 19th-century French ceramic traditions into contemporary artistic practice. \nFollowing the talk\, head down to the Alberta Craft Gallery on Level 2 for the artist reception\, where you can experience the exhibition firsthand and connect with the work in a welcoming\, social setting. \nRooted in a historical tradition popularized by makers such as the Faïencerie de Gien in France\, rebus plates once conveyed everything from moral lessons to political commentary. This contemporary exhibition revisits and reimagines that form\, offering fresh perspectives on the complexities of our current moment. \nFeaturing work by Montréal-born\, Calgary-based artist and Professor Emerita Mireille Perron—founder of the Laboratory of Feminist Pataphysics—this exhibition reflects a playful yet critical approach to art\, craft\, and social discourse. \nWe’re proud to host this free\, public event at cSPACE. Everyone is welcome to attend and experience the creativity and conversation unfolding within our community. \nThis exhibition is generously supported by Alliance Française. \n\nRSVP Online \n\nSCHEDULE: \n\n\n Craft Talk – 1:00 PM- 2:00 PM: Pictorial Puns: Rebus Plates for Our Times Talk with Dr. Jennifer Salahub\, Craft Historian\, RGO Treehouse 4th floor\, cSPACE\nArtist Reception – 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM: Alberta Craft Calgary\, 2nd floor\, cSPACE\n\nFree | Everyone Welcome

SUMMARY:Gallery Reception: Holding Ground by Eveline Kolijn and Monica Kidd
DESCRIPTION:Reception: Holding Ground by Eveline Kolijn and Monica Kidd\ncSPACE Marda Loop\nLevel 2\nMarch 6\, 2026\n5:00 PM – 8:00 PM \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEveline Kolijn and Monica Kidd present a photographic inquiry of coastlines at cSPACE. \nCoastlines are dynamic by nature—meeting places where roads end and the ocean takes over\, where ships arrive and depart carrying both possibility and peril. They are the last stop before the horizon: liminal spaces where the boundary between land and not-land is constantly in flux. They are also increasingly endangered. As the planet warms\, sea levels rise and storms intensify\, threatening the health and wellbeing of more than half a billion people living in coastal regions worldwide. \nThis exhibition features photographs of people and places affected by coastal erosion\, created by Calgary-based artists Monica Kidd and Eveline Kolijn\, both of whom bring deep environmental concerns to their work. The images represent projects undertaken in Newfoundland & Labrador\, the Magdalen Islands\, Tuktoyaktuk\, France\, Fiji\, Vanuatu\, and Curaçao. \nIn a time of rapid climate change\, these photographs aim to speak for the world’s oceans and the communities connected to them. \nExhibition Hours:\nMarch 2-27\, 2026.\n8:00 AM – 8:00 PM (Closed Sundays)

SUMMARY:Worlds in Motion Artist Reception with Claudia Chagoya + Tia DeLauria
DESCRIPTION:FESTIVAL OF ANIMATED OBJECTS EVENT\n\nFree Artist Reception – Level 1 cSPACE Marda Loop\nJoin us for an artist’s reception with food and beverages in the first floor hallway of cSPACE Marda Loop! \n\nWorlds in Motion delves into the interplay between art\, movement\, and imagination. \nFrom mechanical wonders\, handcrafted puppets and automatons\, this exhibition invites the viewers to engage\, play\, and create their own stories through the work of Rob Ward\, Pam Atkinson and Jenny Dale Stables. \nThe artworks are interactive\, tactile\, and transformative. They serve as conduits of emotions and metaphors that weave fantastic and whimsical narratives\, fostering a unique relationship between the audience and the artwork itself. In addition\, the incorporation of recycled materials adds a compelling dimension to this dialogue. By reimagining what might otherwise be discarded\, these artworks honor the potential for renewal and transformation. They challenge perceptions of waste and consumption\, positioning sustainability not just as an ethic but as a muse for innovation. \nIn other words\, Worlds in Motion is a convergence of resourcefulness\, sustainability\, and emotional resonance\, in an ever-evolving interplay that connects us to creativity itself. This exhibition highlights the dynamic rhythm of these creations\, transcending static existence\, they became pivotal agents of personal and collective expression.

SUMMARY:Opening Reception: The Extraordinary\, Ordinary Nature of Interabled Love
DESCRIPTION:cSPACE Marda Loop\nGallery Level 1\n July 30th-August 24 \nReception August 1st\, 7pm-9pm in the Studio Theatre. \nAn art exhibit exploring romantic love and disability through paintings of everyday moments between the artist and her husband.\nIn her solo exhibit\, Athena Cooper paints the interabled love story between herself and her able-bodied husband highlighting the everyday moments that make up their life together—from the mundane to the life-changing. \nBorn with the rare genetic disorder Osteogenesis Imperfecta (aka “brittle bone disease”) and a wheelchair user since the age of six. Athena struggled with society’s ill-fitting narrative around disability that suggested finding a romantic partner would be an impossible task. \nThe reception will celebrate the culmination of two years of creative work. Light refreshments will be served along with live music provided by local cellist\, Liam Epp. \nThe exhibit is made possible with the generous support of Canada Council for the Arts\, Calgary Arts Development and the City of Calgary. It will be open to the public from July 30th to August 24th.

SUMMARY:Kathy Lewis: Artist Reception
DESCRIPTION:Kathy’s First Art Show \nFrom the moment she attended her first ‘plein air’ drawing class as a child\, Kathy Lewis has been a true artist at heart. Her artistic pursuits are as rich and varied as her life experiences\, with both often intertwined. Now in retirement\, Kathy would love to realize her longstanding dream of exhibiting her art in a gallery for her loved ones and the public to see. \nKathy has always been a dedicated student of her craft. She took an “Intro to Art” course while studying at University of Lethbridge. Then\, she enrolled in a weaving course at a small art school. She also has a certificate in Interior Design from Mount Royal College. In retirement\, she has attended painting classes at Kerby Centre\, Swinton Studios\, and a gallery class at The Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) in New York. In 1972\, she was selected by a jury of local British Columbia artists to weave an abstract tapestry for the municipality of Vancouver. The project\, which took five months to complete\, was displayed in the lobby of Vancouver City Hall and later in the Planning Department Boardroom. She also showcased her work in the Western Arts and Crafts displays at the Calgary Stampede. \nKathy has been a resident of Chartwell Fountains of Mission since October 2023. Her walls are adorned with beautiful paintings\, and she is an active participant in resident activities. In addition to her artistic pursuits\, Kathy has supported various charities including Calgary Food Bank\, Alberta Children’s Hospital Foundation\, and Calgary Homeless Foundation. Kathy’s wish to have a gallery exhibition for her art would fulfill a desire to impact people with her work\, including her friends\, family\, and fellow residents. \nThe Chartwell Foundation is pleased to arrange a gallery exhibition of Kathy’s work! Kathy’s art will be on display at cSPACE Marda Loop\, an acclaimed arts and culture hub in Calgary\, from June 10 to June 29\, with an opening reception on June 26 where Kathy will celebrate with her loved ones.

SUMMARY:Festival of Animated Objects: Multiple Organism
DESCRIPTION:cSPACE Marda Loop\nStudio Theatre \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nby Mind of a Snail | Runtime: 60 minutes \n★★★★★ “Daring … raunchy … ingenious” -VueWeekly\n“Unlike anything you’ve ever seen… the show’s freewheeling inventiveness\, technical precision\, visual and acoustic texture\, and giddy transgressiveness makes it a must-see for anyone who appreciates artistic risk – and wildly original success” -Georgia Straight \nMultiple Organism is a genre and gender-bending surrealist comedy for adults. Expect bizarre and hilarious nudity using the body as a projection surface\, colourful shadow puppetry projections\, and an original musical soundtrack. We’re all just projections\, man. \nThis show is a multi-layered psychedelic dream about having a body – and how our body is seen by others. An artist’s life model\, tired of being objectified\, steals a magical paintbrush and falls down a proverbial rabbit-hole with a pair of sentient toothbrushes. She must decide whether to follow her old internalized script\, or release this script and love herself for who she really is. With a dramatic sub-plot featuring an affair between brushes\, and one of the weirdest personal hygiene rituals you’ve ever seen! \nAlso showing on March 14 at 9pm \nRecommended for ages 17+ \nCW: Nudity\, Sexual Content\, Cartoonish Suicide\, Body Weirdness

DESCRIPTION:cSPACE Marda Loop\nStudio Theatre \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nby Juanita Dawn | Runtime: 55 minutes \nIn this enchanting prairie story\, told through puppetry and music\, one woman braves adversity and befriends unlikely companions. \nSet on the Canadian prairies in the early 1900’s\, we explore the remarkable life of a resilient and tenacious woman\, Willow Mae O’Reilly. \nThe magic and wonder of this little girl’s imagination was the seed that germinated into her unconventional life. During her untethered time on the prairies she found her best friend the gopher and her sometime friend the bossy magpie. \nThese childhood spirits followed her throughout her life. Willow Mae did not always take the road most traveled but she was willing to pay the price for her independence…and that price was often very high. \nBeneath the endless sky of the wind-swept prairies\, the story of our Willow Mae unfolds revealing a life of complex emotions\, unbridled joy and heart breaking sorrow\, the right stuff for an unforgettable tale. \nOne For Sorrow\, Two For Joy has over 30 hand crafted puppets and an all original musical score making this show an extravaganza of music and puppetry! \nAlso showing on March 13 and 14 at 7 pm \nRecommended for ages 13+ \nPuppet Nudity\, Smoking\, Alcohol Use\, Sensitive Subject Matter\, Pregnancy Loss \nUse of flashing lights and Haze

SUMMARY:Dipankar Mukherjee Reception featuring Tinica Commodore
DESCRIPTION:Dipankar Mukherjee – Artist Reception\nLevel 4\ncSPACE Marda Loop\nThis Exposure exhibiting artist will be holding a reception\, featuring a live music set from Tinica Commodore. \n\n\n\nHi I’m Tinica Commodore\, a 28-year-old singer/songwriter originally from London UK. Music has always been a huge part of my life. Growing up\, music was always playing in my household and I was exposed to different types of music\, as well as cultures. Along with music came my love for singing and writing. I love to tell stories and express difficult emotions through songs. I’m deeply inspired by history\, especially\, the 1940s\, 50s and 60s\, I believe it was a beautiful a well as magical time for music. I enjoy the whimsical nostalgic comfort you get from listening to an old-time Jazz record. My musical influences also include artists such as Hiatus Kaiyote\, Billie Eilish\, The Weeknd\, and Lana Del Rey. – Tinica Commodore

SUMMARY:Opening Reception: Eve Johnson | The World is a Woman\, The Woman is a Worker
DESCRIPTION:Reception: November 2nd from 6:00 to 8:00pm\nExhibition runs until November 6th\n4th Floor Cupola & Suite #435\, cSPACE Marda Loop \nYou are invited to join the Calgary Allied Arts Foundation’s studio resident\, Eve Johnson\, for the opening of her exhibition The World is a Woman\, The Woman is a Worker. This exhibition is the result of her residency in the CAAF studio—a mixed media project of fibre sculpture\, and multiple “thread paintings”. These pieces explore the relationship between the earth\, women\, and capitalism. \nEve Johnson is a visual artist living and working in Calgary. Born with disabilities\, she has been creating since the age of three. While taking college level art courses at the age of sixteen\, Eve realised that the art establishment was not a good fit for her. She soon found herself ousted from this setting and began creating independently. Over ten years\, she created simply for herself and received the label of “outsider artist”. Despite this\, Eve joined the National accessArts Centre in late spring of 2021. Since joining this institution\, Eve has had her work shown locally and internationally—as far away as Seoul\, South Korea.

SUMMARY:This is Not My Culture – Pollution Solution Screening and Reception
DESCRIPTION:Pollution Solution is a short 6 minute documentary that explores what people are doing about pollution. Made by a group of 6 young cousins who wonder if the world is ending due to human activity. By asking people how they address the pollution crisis in their everyday lives\, and using animation to illustrate the responses\, the filmmakers hope to inspire viewers to do their part in solving the pollution solution. \nStay for a reception and chat after the screening. \nFILMMAKER BIO \nThe Bum Family are a group of 6 cousins from Calgary who create short animated movies together. At the time of making Pollution Solution\, Maezy\, Medina and Zaiyah Dennie were ages 18\, 16 and 14\, and Berlin\, Ocean and Sol Demuth were ages 18\, 16 and 11. The Bum Family write their concepts\, create the artwork\, direct\, animate and edit their movies. Their short films have screened at over 100 film festivals\, and have won awards for Audience Favourite and Best Animation. They have made a short film for Sesame Street\, and their Lilly Monster character is featured in an augmented reality app\, Lilly in the Lab. \nDIRECTOR STATEMENT \nThe state of climate change\, environmental destruction\, and human beings’ undeniable impact on life on earth prompted us to make a film that asks you to consider what your own pollution solutions are. \nThe Bum Family captured all of our interview material in a series of shoots before the Covid19 quarantine period started. The editing and animation process took place after Calgary was asked to go into lockdown\, with both families in isolation from each other. Animation was done digitally\, a first for the Bum Family\, and by stop-motion animating collages made from recycled materials. \nWebsite:\nhttps://bumfamily.com \nInstagram:\nhttps://www.instagram.com/_bum_family_/ \n  \nPhoto credit: The Bum Family
