SUMMARY:Literature and Freedom
DESCRIPTION:The Calgary Institute for the Humanities presents the 6th Annual Naomi Lacey Memorial Lecture\nIn the century between 1750 and 1850\, the idea of freedom became a central concept for the ways in which European writers understood themselves and their literary works. Yet different writers had very different types of freedom in mind. While some focused on the freedom from patronage\, others talked about the freedom from the pressures of the literary market—and still others about the freedom from the rules governing individual genres\, or even a more abstract sense of freedom that readers could experience when reading literature. Drawing on texts by Rousseau\, Goethe\, Schiller\, and others\, this talk assesses how these various types of freedom coalesced into a concept of literature whose legacy is still felt today. \nMartin Wagner (Ph.D.\, Yale University\, 2014) is Professor of German at the University of Calgary. His research focuses on German literary and intellectual history of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. His latest book\, A Stage for Debate (University of Toronto Press\, 2023)\, assesses the contribution of the most important German-language stage of the nineteenth century\, Vienna’s Burgtheater\, to the social and political debates in Austria. He currently works on a SSHRC-funded project on the history of obedience in Germany.

SUMMARY:Dipankar Mukherjee Reception featuring Tinica Commodore
DESCRIPTION:Dipankar Mukherjee – Artist Reception\nLevel 4\ncSPACE Marda Loop\nThis Exposure exhibiting artist will be holding a reception\, featuring a live music set from Tinica Commodore. \n\n\n\nHi I’m Tinica Commodore\, a 28-year-old singer/songwriter originally from London UK. Music has always been a huge part of my life. Growing up\, music was always playing in my household and I was exposed to different types of music\, as well as cultures. Along with music came my love for singing and writing. I love to tell stories and express difficult emotions through songs. I’m deeply inspired by history\, especially\, the 1940s\, 50s and 60s\, I believe it was a beautiful a well as magical time for music. I enjoy the whimsical nostalgic comfort you get from listening to an old-time Jazz record. My musical influences also include artists such as Hiatus Kaiyote\, Billie Eilish\, The Weeknd\, and Lana Del Rey. – Tinica Commodore

SUMMARY:The Hibernation Project: TIMBER
DESCRIPTION:TIMBER: a collaborative interlocking lumber sculpture\nBUILDING DAYS: Friday\, Feb 16 & Saturday\, Feb 17\, 2024 // 11 am-7 pm\nPUBLIC EXHIBITION: Sunday\, February 18 // 2-6 pm\ncSPACE Eau Claire \n\nTheme by Caitlind r.c. Brown & Wayne Garrett \n\n\n\n\n\n\nPhotos from the Glenbow Archives\, found here. \n\nIn response to the history of cSPACE Eau Claire as the former offices and vault for the Eau Claire & Bow River Lumber Company\, we invite artists & sculptors to join us in crafting a collaborative interlocking lumber sculpture. We will provide lumber\, and artists will create sculptures following (and breaking) any conventions they desire\, with the caveat that their work must\, at some point\, intersect with the sculptures around them. You may choose to work collaboratively\, or design a piece by yourself\, but the object of the experiment is to link the pieces together into one\, giant\, growing\, organic structure – in a futile effort to reanimate the wood and keep it alive. \nAt the summary of the exhibition\, all wood will be repurposed for future projects. \nThis event was inspired in part by Khalid Omokanye’s socially distanced collaborative sculpture\, ISOLATED BABEL\, for The Hibernation Project 2021. \n\nLet us know if you want to participate! \n\nYou don’t need to RSVP to visit the Public Exhibition \n\nThe Hibernation Project is an art intervention occurring annually from Winter to Spring.
