SUMMARY:Welcome to My Renaissance – Artists’ Apres-Midi

SUMMARY:Welcome to My Renaissance – The Story of a Novel\, The Piano Teacher TIME TBA
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to My Renaissance is an artist-in-residency featuring Calgary playwright Eugene Stickland and friends. \nThe Story of a Novel: The Piano Teacher. Time TBA.\nFirst there is the task of writing the book in the first place. In my case\, this was a departure from writing plays\, newspaper columns and poetry. So how does the approach and execution differ? And then what happens after the book has been written? What are the best options for publishing? Once published\, how can one keep it alive in a world of a billion books. In the case of The Piano Teacher\, there has been talk of turning it into a movie. What does that process look like? We will look at different aspects of the life of a novel and I will give a brief reading from the book. Anyone interested in writing a novel\, maybe shifting from one form to another\, all are welcome! \nAbout Eugene Stickland \nBorn and educated in Regina\, after completing an MFA in Theatre at Toronto’s York University\, Eugene arrived in Calgary in 1994 and began a ten year residency at Alberta Theatre Projects. SUMMARY:Welcome to My Renaissance – ART TALK the TALK
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to My Renaissance is an artist-in-residency featuring Calgary playwright Eugene Stickland and friends. \nART TALK the TALK\nBecause I am first and foremost a playwright\, an afternoon devoted to the beleaguered art form known as “the Theatre.” All are welcome from any discipline to talk about their journey creating theatre in an increasingly uncertain age. Politics\, funding\, exposure\, security\, respect\, frustrations\, celebrations and anything else we end up talking are all on the agenda (which doesn’t really exist).  No question too great or small! \nAbout Eugene Stickland \nBorn and educated in Regina\, after completing an MFA in Theatre at Toronto’s York University\, Eugene arrived in Calgary in 1994 and began a ten year residency at Alberta Theatre Projects. SUMMARY:CALL presents: Read it Again
DESCRIPTION:Please note this event takes place at the Marda Loop Community Association building\, kitty corner to cSPACE Marda Loop.  \nThis recurring event\, hosted by The Calgary Association of Lifelong Learners (CALL)\, is an interest group that re-reads a classic work of fiction\, to engage in an in-depth discussion. \n\n“Most of us study the classics when we’re students – join us for an opportunity to re-read one of these books and discuss it from a different — dare we say – more mature perspective.” \n\nThe focus for the first session is on The English Patient by Michael Ondaatje\, winner of the 1992 Booker Prize. We’ll divide the book into four approximately equal sections for discussion at each of our four meetings. Participants will be asked to read the first section before our first meeting\, and come prepared each day to contribute to the discussion as well as helping to research and provide background of topics and issues that arise. \nReach out to CALL in the link below to register. \nhttps://calgarylifelonglearners.ca/Read-It-Again \nCALL is a core tenant in the cSPACE Marda Loop Creative Community.

SUMMARY:Welcome to My Renaissance – Poetry/Publishing Fandango: Publisher’s Forum
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to My Renaissance is an artist-in-residency featuring Calgary playwright Eugene Stickland and friends. \nPoetry/Publishing Fandango: Publisher’s Forum.\nB House and the future and recent past of publishing in this day and age. \nGuests: Kirk Miles\, Neil Flemming\, Tyler Perry\, Derek Beaulieu and others \nIn 2009 we started B House Publications\, with an eye on publishing primarily plays and poetry that otherwise might be forgotten. That was 15 years ago.  More recently\, I partnered with a theatre company to publish a play they had commissioned and produced the premier production. Whatever happened to B House and what does the future of publishing look like today? Are books necessary any longer? Are they important aspects of the writing process or merely quaint artifacts\, reminders of a bygone age\, an age most of us actually lived in and were certainly shaped by. \nAn informal discussion open to anyone interested in writing\, in publishing\, or in creating books and preserving a part of our local culture. \nAfterwards\, we will adjourn to the Ship and Anchor Pub on 17th and join the Drunken Poets Society for some poems and beer and continued convivial conversation. \nAbout Eugene Stickland \nBorn and educated in Regina\, after completing an MFA in Theatre at Toronto’s York University\, Eugene arrived in Calgary in 1994 and began a ten year residency at Alberta Theatre Projects. During this time he wrote and saw produced ten plays — 6 for ATP\, 3 for Lunchbox Theatre and 1 for Theatre Network in Edmonton. In total\, he has written 19 plays that have been produced in Calgary\, Edmonton or Toronto and then throughout the world\, from London to Istanbul. Following the residency at ATP\, Eugene wrote a feature weekly column for the Calgary Herald for 6 years\, a total of approximately 250\,000 published words. In 2015 Eugene published his only novel (to date)\, The Piano Teacher\, recipient of the W.O. Mitchell Award. Plans are being made to make a movie of the Piano Teacher\, with Eugene writing the screenplay. Eugene currently has several projects underway which he is excited to share over the course of his cSPACE Eau Claire residency. He lives in the Beltline area of Calgary with his wife Belina.

SUMMARY:Welcome to My Renaissance – Helen McPhaden and girls from the Stardale Program
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to My Renaissance is an artist-in-residency featuring Calgary playwright Eugene Stickland and friends. \nHelen McPhaden and girls from the Stardale Program\nJoin Eugene and Stardale director Helen McPhaden for a curated screening of the award-winning video The Road. The Stardale program caters to adolescent indigenous girls in the Calgary area. Eugene has worked with the girls of the program for 11 years\, helping them bring their ideas and poetry to the stage. Not to be deterred by the pandemic\, we transformed a stage play into a video\, shot and edited and presented it to the general public as well as special interest groups starting in 2020. The Road was written in response to the findings of the Commission on Missing and Murdered Aboriginal Women\, written and performed by the girls of Stardale 2020. \nThis session will be of interest to anyone curious about indigenous culture in Calgary\, and learning about the girls’ experience of living here. Helen and Eugene have worked with the girls for over a decade producing different shows and will share their insights on working in a  culturally appropriate manner with First Nations girls. \nAbout Eugene Stickland \nBorn and educated in Regina\, after completing an MFA in Theatre at Toronto’s York University\, Eugene arrived in Calgary in 1994 and began a ten year residency at Alberta Theatre Projects. SUMMARY:Festival of Animated Objects: Multiple Organism
DESCRIPTION:cSPACE Marda Loop\nStudio Theatre \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nby Mind of a Snail | Runtime: 60 minutes \n★★★★★ “Daring … raunchy … ingenious” -VueWeekly\n“Unlike anything you’ve ever seen… the show’s freewheeling inventiveness\, technical precision\, visual and acoustic texture\, and giddy transgressiveness makes it a must-see for anyone who appreciates artistic risk – and wildly original success” -Georgia Straight \nMultiple Organism is a genre and gender-bending surrealist comedy for adults. Expect bizarre and hilarious nudity using the body as a projection surface\, colourful shadow puppetry projections\, and an original musical soundtrack. We’re all just projections\, man. \nThis show is a multi-layered psychedelic dream about having a body – and how our body is seen by others. An artist’s life model\, tired of being objectified\, steals a magical paintbrush and falls down a proverbial rabbit-hole with a pair of sentient toothbrushes. She must decide whether to follow her old internalized script\, or release this script and love herself for who she really is. With a dramatic sub-plot featuring an affair between brushes\, and one of the weirdest personal hygiene rituals you’ve ever seen! \nAlso showing on March 14 at 9pm \nRecommended for ages 17+ \nCW: Nudity\, Sexual Content\, Cartoonish Suicide\, Body Weirdness
