SUMMARY:Alison Frank’s Love Aquatic
DESCRIPTION:cSPACE Marda Loop\nLevel 2 Gallery\nApril 29-May 11\, 2024 \nLove Aquatic is an art exhibition featuring the painting\, drawing and photography by Alison Frank. It is the merger of her work as a visual artist and as a professional mermaid. Her paintings in this collection are inspired by the beauty experienced and captured through her freediving as a mermaid. The underwater world is a tranquil escape where time and daily pressures seem to dissolve. Water and the gravity free environment have many therapeutic healing benefits from fitness to pain relief. This solstice has been one component\, for her\, in managing a diagnosis with Multiple Sclerosis in a holistic approach. To this underwater world\, she adds her surreal and playful mix of characters. Children gravitate to water and the joy of swimming. As adults\, we often lose our affinity for this magical place. She visually shares the ephemeral beauty of the way water reflects light in a way we can never experience above the surface. DESCRIPTION:Do you have that favourite vintage or fast fashion garment that you wish you could have forever\, and make in a million colours? Want to recreate it? Come join us in the bright & spacious riyoko studio to learn how to make a pattern\, sew a test fit\, and learn skills to remake the piece you want to wear time after time. \nThis class is five 3-hour sessions. The next sessions are: \nSaturday May 11\, 18\, 25 & June 1\, 8 – 10 am to 1 pm \n*Beginner sewing experience necessary. \n*Students will be asked to bring up to three simple pieces that they’d like to remake\, such as button up shirts\, blouses\, sweaters\, slip dresses\, pants or shorts (No zippers!). \n*Students are encouraged to bring their own supplies (pencil\, eraser\, pins\, measuring tape\, fabric scissors\, paper scissors) except rulers (which are available for class use\, or purchase in the Riyoko Work/Shop during the class) and paper which is supplied by Riyoko Work/Shop. \n*We believe in supporting small\, and local. Join Tara Vahab and Sepidar Yeganeh Farid for a session filled with creativity\, healing\, and connection as we come together to reflect on the past 1.5 years events in Iran. We are hopping to bring some peace and joy by celebrating womanhood\, life\, and freedom through art\, songwriting\, karaeko\,dance\, discussions and short creative activities \nThis in-person event is a unique opportunity to bond with fellow community members and express yourself through various art forms. I received my first artistic award at age nine and I advocate for mental health through my art. In 2015\, I graduated from the University of Calgary with a Bachelor of Fine Arts\, and immediately afterwards\, I founded LOUD (Let Optimism Unleash Dreams) Art Society\, a non-profit organization that supports the cultivation of positive mental health and well-being through creative practices. \nMuch of my artistic practice is informed by community connection through public art projects\, murals\, and workshops that key into art-making and mental health. Bright colours\, pattern-making\, found objects\, and newspaper are elements that I return to throughout my practice and are informed by my research on the metaphysical and its ties to humanity\, empathy\, and joy. \nAt the heart of my practice is a deep appreciation of the power of the arts to change lives for the better. My ongoing series of woven newspaper sculptures\, for example\, reframe materials that exacerbate mental health issues for many\, to speak to humanity’s ability to take uncertainty and pain and transform it slowly and intentionally into something beautiful and unexpected. \nDuring the 2023 Celebration for the Arts hosted by Mayor Gondek and Calgary Arts Development\, I was honoured to receive the Mamdani Arts Leadership Award. I was also awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee medal for 2023\, which recognizes exceptional contributions to Alberta’s communities. I have been awarded grant funding by Calgary Arts Development and the Alberta Foundation for the Arts. SUMMARY:All About Sleeves: Sleeve Pattern Making Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Riyoko Work/Shop hosts All About Sleeves.  \nThis is a great follow-up to Pattern Making 101 offering skills to continue learning about fitting a beautifully tailored garment. Topics of discussion will include: \n1) proper measuring of the arm and how to alter the pattern accordingly\n2) how to calculate the perfect amount of sleeve cap ease\n3) what to do with those elbow darts!\n4) common and popular sleeve designs \nWorking hands-on\, students will develop their own reference pattern making notes. This course will be jam packed with serious skills. \nNext sessions is: \nTuesday April 16\, 23 & 30 – 6 pm to 9 pm \n*Prerequisite for this class is intermediate experience\, or Patternmaking 101 (https://riyoko.ca/products/patternmaking-103) \n*Class fees include all supplies except rulers\, tape\, and fabric scissors. Rulers are available for purchase from the instructor during the class.
